Student bodies protest irregularities in LLB admission

Student unions and youth associations of the city started an agitation on Tuesday to protest against the alleged irregularities in LLB admission at V T Choksi Law College (VTCLC) of Sarvajanik Education Society (SES).

National Students Union of India (NSUI), Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) started the protests.

The issue of irregularities in admissions at VTCLC was first raised by NSUI on Monday and they made a representation to VNSGU vice-chancellor Dakshesh Thakar. On Tuesday, IYC and ABVP also held a demonstration in the issue at the college campus in Athwalines.

It is alleged that the college did not follow the cut-off merit percentage and few ineligible students were given admission.

"Some eligible students, who had required marks as per merit list, did not get admission while those who had less than cut-off marks were admitted. During checking, it was found that the students with less percentage than required got admission due to their connection with influential people," said Raju Rabari of NSUI.

"Few students from general category who scored less than cut-off marks 55 per cent got admission. In OBC merit, the cut-off is 52 per cent marks but a student with 54 per cent marks did not get admission," IYC stated in its memorandum.

The college authorities, meanwhile, claimed that the allegations are baseless. "Admissions are the prerogative of the college and we makes necessary changes to fill up the number of seats available. There is no irregularity or injustice done to any student," said Jagruti Patel, principal of VTCLC.

"Every year some or other allegation is made about admissions by different groups. VNSGU is assessing implementation of centralized online admission to improve transparency," said Dakshesh Thakar.
