"We are going to switch over to non-contact wars in the future. The focus is now on developing robotics, underwater vehicles and unmanned systems," said Avinash Chander, the man behind the Agni series of missiles, scientific advisor to the defence minister and director general of the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
Speaking at the 55th Institute Day of IIT-Madras, Chander said that the country is making breakthroughs in radars, with 80% of it provided by the DRDO.
Research should now focus on developing devices, Chander said. "We are looking to create a national initiative to look for devices," he said.
Calling for innovation, he said that so far Indians have innovated to survive. "And, we are excellent survivors. But, we need to innovate to become leaders in technology," he added.
IIT-Madras director Bhaskar Ramamurthi gave away the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Awards to 10 former students of the institute.
One of the recipients of the award, Ramesh Govindan, professor of computer science at the University of Southern California in the US, whose research includes finding a map of the internet, said, "We get peer recognition for the work they do, but when the award comes from my alma mater, particularly from a place that has seen a lot of smart people, it is very special."
Govindan is currently researching mobile computing, privacy and energy issues in smartphones. "Smartphones have a lot to offer us, in terms of not just helping humans with personal activities but also maybe telemedicine," he said.
Raju Venkatraman, founder of Medall Healthcare, another recipient of the award, said that he was proud of the way the institute has maintained its aura.
