Many Kendriya Vidyalaya students who chose to study German, did so believing it will give them a chance to visit Germany. At least for some, it now has.
Selected from KVs across the country, 29 students and five principals have left for a week's trip to Berlin that has been sponsored by the Goethe-Institute Max Mueller Bhavan as part of its "German in 1000 schools" project. The initiative is supporting the teaching of German in KVs and this year, over 500 schools across the country will be offering the subject.
"The students were chosen through an online language competition organized by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan in cooperation with the Goethe-Institute Max Mueller Bhavan. The children, winners of the online test, aged 12 to 14 are from KV schools as far apart as Jagdalpur in Chhatisgarh Ernakalum , Mughalsarai, Delhi, Amritsar, Gandhinagar, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and Shimla," says a statement issued by MMB.
In Berlin, the students and principals will spend time in German schools with their peers. They will also be part of a football training session in a children's football club. They will see the sights, visit museums and go for picnics and a boat ride on one of Berlin's famous lakes. "The trip will give the students a chance to use the German they have learnt in their classrooms in Germany, making the subject come alive." says Avinash Dikshit, commissioner, KVS.
Three years ago the Kendriya Vidyalaya headquarters took a decision to teach foreign languages in their schools. In the first year itself, 150 schools took the initiative and started teaching German. The Goethe-Institut Max Mueller Bhavan trains teachers in foreign language teaching methodology, gives KVs library starter kits and offers cultural programs and competitions.
